Lightening Dark Areas On Your Skin
If you need to lighten hyperpigmentation of the skin the first priority is to start with prevention by wearing sunscreen. I recommend wearing sunscreen 365 days a year.
Most of the products that help are very harsh, Hydroquinone can cause organ toxicity. Hydroquinone higher than 1% in band in Europe. Five states in America band its use. In recent years companies have created healthier options. Dr. Obagi sold his previous skin care line centered around Hydroquinone (Obagi), and has created ZO Health offering safer lightening and brightening skin care options, although he still has physician only 4% Hydroquinone products.
According to Kline’s report, sales for products addressing hyperpigmentation account for nearly one-quarter of total take-home product sales and grow faster than any other concern, including acne and aging, among others. Medical care providers are the main channel for hyperpigmentation products, accounting for over 70% of the total sales. The same channel also shows the most promise and is poised to become the leading distribution channel of professional skin care products, overtaking the spas and salons channel by 2019. Hydroquinone-free Products Excel as Hyperpigmentation Climbs
The following recommendations for lighting pigment are:
Sunscreen everyday, I like the Avene line, and Neutrogena.
Gentle Cleanser from Cetaphil, or Avene.
Chemical peels once a month, or at home use of a Glycolic Acid product.
Microdermabrasion, can be done once a week.
Vitamin C serum, I prefer CTFO serum as it works and is cost effective.
Retin -A or Retinol, I like Avene retinol products, there not as harsh as prescription Retin-A.
Wear a hat or use an umbrella if you're out for long periods of time in the sun.
Use moisturizer as needed.
Pigmented skin due to sun or post acne lesions takes commitment, it can take anywhere between 6 months to a year on average. You may notice results sooner. I feel working with a Dermatologist and Esthetician is most beneficial. Over the counter products usually have no results. The list of recommendations has to be adjusted to skin tolerance. Remember more product usually equals more skin irritation. Most people think when the pigmented area is pink and irritated it's an allergic reaction and they stop using the products. You can not remove pigmentation without some sensitivity. See a Dermatologist so he, or his staff can supervise.
Never go in the sun without sunscreen especially after using Retin-A or Retinol products.
**** Pregnancy warning, many of these products can not be used while pregnant!!!! Hormonal pigmentation can be treated after breastfeeding, unless a product is safe according to your doctor.
