I’m a 38-year-old man who works in a highly competitive environment. My work hours are extremely long and I travel on business too often for my comfort, but I’m climbing up the corporate ladder, which will provide financial security to my family. How do I find harmony within me despite the pressures that come from outside?

Being successful in ones career often comes at a price. Time with loved ones is precious, and there is no price tag on that. The days of "selling your soul" to the company are over.

So what can one do to maintain a harmonious life.

At work you can never be rewarded enough for time lost with family or not having downtime to re energize yourself. Look for ways to manage normal work hours effectively so you have more time to do things you love.

Often times we feel like we are climbing this corporate ladder, and we must keep going above and beyond what other coworkers do. Ask yourself, "Am I really compensated better than those that just show up to work and do what is expected of them"? Compensation can be monetary or non material. The thing is a good benefits package includes a way to balance your life outside of work.

If you are going to continue working at the same pace I encourage you to have a set schedule that allows time to de -stress and enjoy your family. Most companies are aware of the needs of their employees, moreover the should understand the need for a stress free life. Stress and lack of rest contribute to mental, and physical illness.
