Gloomy Weather Increasing Depression

By Michele Marchese

Seasonal Affective Disorder is hard to deal with, you just don’t feel like doing anything. Overeating, sadness, lack of energy, over sleeping, shutting yourself off from the world. If this sounds familiar, you may have SAD. If you already suffer from a mood disorder this can increase chances of having SAD during the winter.

These are some things that can help:

Verilux Happy Light:
Full spectrum white light therapy yo mimic the sun for times there isn’t enough sun.

Take Vitamin D 3 1,500-2,000 IU per day, or if you can get your doctor to prescribe 50,000 units once a week it maybe a better option especially for those that are elderly or have an autoimmune disease.

On sunny days get outside for natural sunlight, 8-20 minutes depending on skin tone. Those that have more melanin will require more exposure time.

Eat fatty fish as they are a good source of Vitamin D Ann Omega 3. Salmon, sardines, tuna, and trout are good examples. Methylmercury is found in fish and is not recommended for pregnant woman or to consume in high amounts for anybody.

Mushrooms are a good plant based source of Vitamin D.

Egg yolks, milk, soy milk, and orange juice also provide a good source of Vitamin D.

Essential oils such as Lavender, Rose, Bergamot, Jasmine, Orange, Chamomile, Sage, and Ylang Ylang.

EFT-

Herbal Remedies, Saint John Wort Tea, Chamomile, Lavender, and Passion Flower.
